The Sun Fell Softly on the Ocean—a sweeping cinematic reimagining of one of Sweden’s most beloved ballads, newly translated by Felix Taube.
Acclaimed Swedish vocalist Thomas Feiner (Anywhen, Exit North) and multi-instrumentalist Johan Ludvig Rask unveil the first single from Blå Tolkningar—an album dedicated to reimagining iconic Swedish songs in a melancholic, cinematic indie style. The first song, The Sun Fell Softly on the Ocean, is out on 28 March. It is a bold reinterpretation of Evert Taube’s classic ballad Så skimrande var aldrig havet, translated into English by Taube’s own grandson, Felix Taube.
Originally composed in the late 1940s, the song has been recorded by some of Sweden’s most revered voices. Yet, despite its enduring presence in Swedish culture, it has never before been released in English—until now.
Feiner and Rask have gently transformed Taube’s original troubadour piece into something more expansive—retaining its wistful beauty while deepening its emotional resonance. Feiner’s signature baritone and Rask’s reverberating seven-string guitar bring a new dimension to the song, bridging tradition with a modern, atmospheric sensibility. "Blå Tolkningar is about exploring these songs through a new emotional prism—drawing on their melancholy, their depth, their timelessness," says Feiner. "Felix’s translation preserves the soul of the original ballad while opening it up to a new audience outside Sweden."
The Sun Fell Softly on the Ocean is the first in a series of releases leading to a full album, in which Feiner and Rask reinterpret other cherished songs from the Swedish canon, reworking them into lush, introspective soundscapes. The single was released worldwide on 28 March across all major streaming platforms.
